There is a small chance you didn’t hear about this guy, but if you’re into SoulCalibur, you definitely heard this guy. OmegaXCN is not only a long-time competitor but also a well-known tournament commentator you can hear on many US SC streams!

If you had to introduce yourself in three sentences to some SoulCalibur player who didn’t know you, what would you say?

I’m Omega, the one from South Jersey and not from DR. I’ve been a competitive Soulcalibur player since SC2 and Taki has always been my main. Along with competing, you’ll also find me on commentary at just about every tournament.

What is the origin or meaning of your nickname?

Oh god I think I was 13 when I came up with OmegaXcn as my online forum name. I wanted to do some kind of thing on Omega Red from the X-Men but throwing in my initials (CN). It’s one of those things I would go back and change when I first started competing, but it just stuck with me.

How did it happen that you ended up playing fighting games?

I grew up in the arcade era so I played just about every fighting game that came out since Street Fighter 2. But I think my spark really came the first Soulcalibur, where I won my first tournament spamming windroll B, and also Marvel vs Capcom 2.

Who do you main in SC6 and why?

I played Taki for so long so there was no question I was going to main her in SC6. But what kept me playing her was when the Taki community discovered she had Possession Rush Cancels, something I loved in the first two Caliburs.

What do you consider to be your greatest SC6 achievement and why?

I had a rough start competitively when SC6 first came out, so I gained some serious issues with my emotions and my confidence. April Annihilation 2019 was when I made my first big performance at a major, placing top 4. The real achievement was really sitting down with myself and getting through my issues with anger and frustration with the game, which really boiled down to “get better, but remember that it’s fun dammit.”

This led me to a bunch of top 8 showings at majors like CEO, Combo Breaker, and EVO. But April Annihilation will always be a special one for me.

If you will be able to add one more character to SC6 – either existing SC character, or a guest one – who will you pick and why?

Guess character? Roronoa Zoro sword-in-mouth style from One Piece, easy.

If SC7 will be released, what do you wish to be changed and/or kept from the current game?

Honestly, if SC6 had the greatest training and character tutorial modes in the history of fighting games, everyone would see how deep and special the game truly is. So SC7 should invest big on tutorial modes.

Other than that, rollback netcode and toning down the complexity of the game, while maintaining the series trademark of being very easy to learn but very deep, would give the game more lasting impact.

Please answer a single question that you were not asked but you would like to answer!

No, I’m not the incredible Zasalamel player from DR.

BONUS: You can hang out with one SoulCalibur character of your choice. Who it will be and where will you two go?

Is Taki too obvious of an answer? I’d love to learn ninja shit and kill demons. Other than that, Maxi seems like he’d be a good drinking buddy.

Thank you for the interview!
